Matthew Walton, BSc, MSc, JD
Matt is a born and raised Albertan. He has studied at the University of Lethbridge and Calgary, earning a bachelors degree in Biology, a masters degree in medical science, and his law degree in 2019. Matt completed his articling requirements underneath several criminal defence lawyers in Calgary, and was called to the Bar in June of 2020.
During law school Matt was an active volunteer and employee with Student Legal Assistance, a pro bono law clinic run through the University of Calgary. Through Student Legal Assistance, Matt gained a solid understanding of criminal defence work, specifically in the context of impaired driving. Matt also spent several months during law school working for the Crown Prosecutor’s office. He spent a large amount of time in Calgary’s regional courts, prosecuting provincial and criminal offences. Matt has taken the experience he has gained while working with the Crown and translated it to better defend his clients.
Throughout articling Matt spent 1 year working with multiple criminal defence lawyers. He worked on countless cases in many different areas, including drug offences, weapons offences, violent offences, sexual offences, and driving offences. He gained a large amount of experience in regards to bail, trial work, and sentencing procedures.
Since being called to the bar, Matt has practiced exclusively in criminal defence. Matt has worked on files in every aspect of criminal law, from theft under $5000 to murder. He is well versed in criminal procedure and trial work. He has a strong focus on Charter based defences, often arising in the context of impaired driving or drug offences. He has helped over 1000 individuals navigate the criminal court system. On many occasions, he has had individuals charges withdrawn without them ever setting foot in a courtroom.
